About ReadyNotRich

ReadyNotRich exists because emergency preparedness has a reputation problem. Most advice online is written for extreme survivalists — bunkers, year-long food stockpiles, and gear costing thousands. That leaves out everyone else.

The reality is that most emergencies are mundane: power outages, severe storms, temporary job loss, or supply chain disruptions. A household can handle all of these comfortably with a few hundred dollars of sensible preparation and a bit of planning.

We research guides and recommend products for ordinary households with ordinary budgets. No fearmongering, no survivalist identity required — just practical, honest advice.

Who writes ReadyNotRich

Hi, I'm Rita — the person behind ReadyNotRich. I caught the prepping bug years ago watching Doomsday Preppers, and it never let go. I've prepped for emergencies ever since: my car and my home are always ready, and I don't leave the house without a backpack of kit I'd actually want with me if something went wrong.

What always put me off the wider prepping world was the cost — the bunkers, the year-long stockpiles, the four-figure gear lists. You don't need any of that. I built ReadyNotRich to help ordinary UK households get genuinely prepared on a normal budget, so that if the worst ever happens, more of us have a real chance of coming through it in one piece. Everything I write here is the honest, affordable version: what actually matters, what to skip, and what it really costs.

How we research

Every factual claim on this site — survival water figures, food and power numbers, risk statistics — is checked against primary and official sources before it is published, and attributed to the body that actually said it. We cite organisations such as FEMA, the CDC, the NHS, the World Health Organisation (via GOV.UK's Prepare campaign), NOAA, the UK Cabinet Office, the US Energy Information Administration and the ONS, rather than passing round unsourced figures. Where UK and US guidance differ — for example, water per person per day — we use the correct figure for the reader's own country.

We are honest about limits. When we recommend a product we explain what it cannot do as well as what it can, and we do not claim to have lab-tested gear we have only researched. Most of what we write about is cheap or free: knowing where your stopcock is, keeping some cash in small notes, filling a water container. If something is not worth your money, we say so.

Guidance and prices change, and so do we. If you spot something out of date or wrong, tell us and we will correct the page — accuracy matters more to us than being first.
